Budapest: Budget, beauty, party

Updated: May 20, 2020

The beautiful Hungarian capital with huge history and endless nightlife.

Buda-lovely-pest! I heard once from someone before visiting the city. And it was not wrong! It's almost impossible not to fall in love once you start walking around. Suppose you have a low budget and want to go somewhere for a couple of days, will Budapest be an option? Definitely yes!

The Hungarian capital is well known for having affordable prices. Budapest is an all in all. If you are a historian geek or a party soul, you have chosen the right place to spend a time getaway. But, before starting your trip, let me tell you about the city.

Firstly, Budapest was two cities divided by the Danube river. Buda and Pest. Afterward, in the 19th century, they managed to create one city. Nowadays, the Hungarian capital is a student city with cozy cafes, relaxing thermal baths, and stunning architecture.

Mentioning architecture, let me tell you about St. Stephen's Basilica, which gets its name in honor of the first Hungarian King. The entry to the church is free and worth appreciating the incredible Hungarian art and design on the walls. Additionally, don't forget to walk up the tower for 800 ft (2.50 euro) and enjoy the terrific views of the city. Be early to make the best pictures!

Minutes away from the Basilica is Chain Bridge, which connects Buda and Pest. It's one of the worldwide engineering wonders. Crossing the river will give you fascinating views from Fisherman's Bastion as well as Buda Castle.

The Castle might be your next stop once you cross the Bridge. There's a funicular just in front which takes you up to Buda Castle just for 3 euros unless you want to work out a bit and take the stairs on the left side. Buda Castle was one of the first buildings in the 13th century and a scenario of historical episodes through the years. Today, the Baroque architecture Building is one of the must-see places in Budapest.

Steps away from Buda Castle are Fisherman's Bastion. One of the most photographed places in the whole city. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful parts of the city. The neo-gothic terrace has seven lookout towers which represent the seven Hungarian founder tribes of Budapest. This fairy-tale place is the perfect scenery to make killer pictures of the Danube River, the Chain Bridge, or the Hungarian Parliament.

Backpacker Tip: Be an early bird and go around 7 am to make the best pictures. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Did you read Hungarian Parliament?

Yes! You are right. The next stop, not too far from the Bastion, is the well known Hungarian Parliament. With stunning architecture and more than 100 statues all around, it's, without doubt, a notable landmark in the country. Take the road by the Danube, relax, and enjoy the delightful views around.

Backpacker Tip: Don't miss the changing guard every hour!

On the left side of the parliament, go down to the river, and you will find The Shoes on the Danube. It's a memorial to the execution of many Jews in the 1940s. Therefore, a Hungarian film director decided to paid tribute to the victims laying 60 shoes along the river.

Let the road takes you to Heroes Square, an imposing and large square with big statues that represents the Magyars (ethnic group in Hungary) and other Hungarian leaders.

After long walks and loads of history and architecture, it's time to discover other attractions that Budapest has to offer. Probably the funniest and relaxing part of your trip. Let me introduce you to Szechenyi Thermal Baths. The biggest medicinal bath in Europe with more than 15 pools inside steam cabinets, saunas, and massage rooms.

The prices could be between 15 - 16 euros depending on the day. However, it's an unforgettable experience.

If you think about food, Budapest will surprise you with its tasty cuisine. Let's head down to Central Market Hall. A UNESCO World heritage that will conquer you with a variety of culinary specialties of Hungary. Don't miss the Langos, pronounced lángosh in Hungarian. It's fried dough with sour cream and cheese is a traditional dish also for vegetarians in Budapest.

Are you a party person? Are you always encouraging people to have a night out? If your answer was yes, then you are in the right place. If your answer was no, Budapest and its bohemian bars are going to change your mind. You might think that Budapest gets quiet when the museums, castles, and baths are closed but in this city, there is always something to do.

The Hungarian capital is the home of ruin bars.

Get into a crowded place with old furniture, walls plenty of stickers or graffiti, and especially cheap alcohol, ergo, ideal to go out with friends, and enjoy the night with the best vibes. Szimpla Kert is one of the most famous and authentic bars in town. With music venue, food, and a garden.

Are you looking to dance away? Instant club offers buzzing nights and 8 bars, all of them open until 6 am every day. Get in the club, go through the corridors, some steps up, and you will be in the balcony overlooking at many dance floors with good music taste. The entrance is free but usually crowded. Be on time to skip the queue!

By the way, if you are traveling alone, many hostels which have activities like bus party or boat party. Fascinating in wintertime, memorable in the summertime. Perfect time to meet other travelers.
