Mystery and freedom two words come to my mind when I think about Christiania. A town inside Copenhagen with its particular way of living. Have you ever thought about a place where you can dress as you like, express your beliefs and thought without judgment? That's Freetown Christiania which only belongs to Copenhagen geographically. But, before you enter the world of freedom. There is some information to be considered.
Don't run, have fun
In the beginning, this part of the city was an abandoned military area in 1971. Afterwards, a group of homeless people turned it into their home. Thenceforward, they did their way. They made their laws and rules independent of the Danish government.
The vibrant and funny town rejects everything related to fear. In that way, run means escaping from something and make chaos. Be kind, be friendly. You are in a safe place.
It's all about colours
If Christiania is a synonym of freedom, it's also a synonym of art. The hippie lifestyle of its residents is visible in every part of the town. Colourful walls, houses and creative murals are a delight for the eyes and give you the feeling to keep exploring.
Drug use is permitted
Although dealers sell drugs openly, it is not allowed.
Christiania has been known for a long time as a green light district because of the variety of cannabis you can find over there. Even bars or cafes allow you to consume them inside.
However, the local government tried several times to crack down on the dealing around the area.
One of the most crucial times for the community was in 2016 after a police officer was shot and three people injured. Therefore, the vibrant and free community decided to make a campaign to reduce the drug sale and persuade locals and tourist to stop buying drugs from dealers.
There's a beautiful lake closeby
It's probably one of the cosiest and favourite spots for locals and every people who visit Christiania. Plenty of people drinking, smoking and listening to music. If you are a solo traveller, it is the perfect place to meet locals. Just walk up and say hi! Danes are well known for being open and friendly. Bring your drink - very cheap around Christiania in comparison with Copenhagen- and forget your shyness. It's always interesting to hear the local's opinion about the city.
Sounds like you had a great time! Added to my to-do list for when I finally get to Copenhagen.
Nice post! I love the mural on the house in the photo and I can see it'll be a cool place to visit or live in for a while. I'm not sure about all the drugs, though but like the efforts being put in stopping/minimizing it.
Wow Christiana sounds very unique. I had no idea anything like it exists. It sounds like a very liberating place to explore, I'll have to look more up about it!
